Iam designing a website but i am little bit confused which doctype to use?

doctypes are the important in building a website. Depending on the types of doctypes the behavior of website changes.
We have transitional, strict in both html & xhtml.
Most of the them use transitional, where it ignores minor error and runs the websites.
but strict will follow all the rules in building a website.
if you are good at html then better to go with transitional xhtml where you can validate it.
